Bishop of Legazpi condemns killing of journalist Noel Bellen Samar, calls for justice

Bishop Joel Z. Baylon of Legazpi has condemned the killing of broadcast journalist Noel Bellen Samar, calling it a “senseless act of violence” and urging authorities to ensure justice and accountability.

In a statement, the prelate extended “heartfelt condolences and prayers” to Samar’s family, friends, and colleagues, saying the clergy and laity “share in their grief and express our solidarity with all who condemn this killing and who call for justice and accountability.”

Samar, 54, was driving along Maharlika Highway in Guinobatan, Albay, on October 20 when an unidentified gunman opened fire, hitting him multiple times in the chest and abdomen.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and died the following day after undergoing a medical procedure.

He was a presenter for DWIZ radio station and hosted programs on Kadunong ITV, an online radio platform.

“Nothing can ever justify murder — not personal disputes, not political differences, not even appeals to public order or national security,” Bishop Baylon said.

“May this awaken in all of us a renewed resolve to defend the sanctity of life, to pursue truth with courage, and to work together for peace founded on justice and Christian love,” he added.

The prelate prayed for Samar’s eternal rest, saying, “Through the mercy of God, may the soul of Noel rest in peace. And may such atrocities never again happen in our midst.”

According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), Samar’s death brings to eight the number of journalists killed in the country since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took office in 2022.

Police are investigating the attack to determine whether Samar was targeted because of his work as a journalist. The Philippines remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for members of the press.
