Philippine bishops endorse blood donation drive as act of Christian love

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has thrown its full support behind a nationwide blood donation campaign that will mobilize volunteers across 25 key cities on November 15.

In an endorsement letter, CBCP President Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David praised the campaign organized by Bombo Radyo Philippines and the Philippine Red Cross, describing it as a life-saving effort rooted in the Church’s mission of service.

“In keeping with its tradition of service, Dugong Bombo has become one of the country’s largest and most consistent annual bloodletting events,” the prelate said.

He said the initiative “exemplifies the Christian spirit of charity, compassion, and solidarity — values that lie at the very heart of our faith.”

The prelate underscored that blood donation is not only a humanitarian act but also a witness of Christian love.

“Every drop of blood donated becomes a concrete expression of love for neighbor, echoing the words of Christ: ‘Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends’ (John 15:13).”

Cardinal David called on dioceses, parishes, and Catholic institutions to help promote the drive and motivate parishioners to participate.

“The CBCP encourages our dioceses, parishes, and Catholic institutions throughout the Philippines to support and promote this noble endeavor, particularly by inviting the faithful to participate as voluntary blood donors and by sharing the advocacy in Masses and parish announcements in the days leading up to the event,” he said.

He added that the Philippine Church must stand with organizers in their mission to save lives during the Jubilee Year of Hope.
