Justice body of Divine Word missionaries backs Leni Robredo’s candidacy

The group expressed its commitment to a “free and honest elections,” saying they will “not slide into despair or cynicism"

The Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation office of the Society of Divine Word has expressed support for the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo, saying “we need leaders of change” for the “wounded-struggling nation.”

In a statement of support released over the weekend, the JPIC-SVD office in the Central Province said that they “have been made painfully aware” of many policies and practices in the past six years that have oppressed the people, especially the poor.

These policies and practices have led to the assault on human rights, mockery of the law, spread of fake news, degradation of moral values, and the surrender of national sovereignty, said the religious congregation.

“We will proudly vote for our choice in this May elections,” read the group’s statement. “Our choice is Leni Robredo for president of the Philippines. Our choice is Kiko Pangilinan as our vice president.”

“Our choice is for the senators under Leni and Kiko’s leadership,” added the statement.

The group said the choice is guided by the statement on the coming elections earlier released by the whole congregation.

Along with the “need for change,” the office also cited their needs in their leaders: fearless in dismantling oppressive structures, who can shun authoritarianism, who seek the truth and reject lied, who lead simple lives, who take action, who do not put themselves above the law, and who can match their words with actions especially in time of crisis.

Among the signatories of the statement are Father Flaviano Villanueva, SVD, a staunch critic of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, and 73 other members of the office and the congregation from priests, brothers, parishioners, lay partners to staff.

The group also expressed its commitment to a “free and honest elections,” saying they will “not slide into despair or cynicism …. We shall alter the course of Philippine history towards positive change.”
