Church’s social action arm backs bill to ban political dynasties

The Catholic Church’s social action arm has thrown its full support behind a proposed measure seeking to ban political dynasties.

Caritas Philippines praised lawmakers who filed the bill in the House, saying political dynasties have long fueled inequality, weakened institutions, and undermined citizen participation.

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, its president, said the proposal aligns with the Church’s push for governance grounded in justice, transparency, and moral leadership, principles it considers essential to public service.

“We welcome this development as a courageous step toward strengthening democratic institutions, promoting fair political participation, and protecting the common good,” Bagaforo said.

He urged senators to act decisively on the counterpart bill, stressing that Filipinos deserve reforms proving political power must serve the common good, not entrenched family interests.

“This clearly presents the opportunity for the Senate to demonstrate its truthful commitment to political reforms,” Bagaforo said.

He added that Caritas Philippines is ready to work with civil society groups, faith-based communities, and government institutions to advance reforms promoting human dignity and inclusive national development.

“Let this be a moment of a true turning point,” he said, urging lawmakers to act with courage and conscience as the country pushes for political systems that genuinely uplift all Filipinos.
