The Diocese of Antipolo marked what it described as “a day of immense grace and joy” as the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Aranzazu in San Mateo, Rizal, was officially elevated to the status of National Shrine.
In a circular letter dated August 21, 2025, Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Cruz Santos welcomed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who returned to the Philippines to lead the historic celebration.
“With hearts full of gratitude, we welcome you, His Eminence Cardinal Tagle, back to your home soil—not only as a son of the Philippines, but as a servant of the universal Church whose presence continues to inspire and uplift us,” Bishop Santos wrote.
The bishop said the elevation is not just ceremonial but “a sacred trust.” He explained, “It is a recognition of the deep devotion of the people, the rich history of faith, and the living witness of love that flows from this community.”
Addressing the clergy, lay faithful, and local officials present, Bishop Santos reminded them that the shrine’s new designation comes with responsibility.
“A National Shrine is not just a beautiful church—it is a spiritual beacon. It must be a place of refuge, of healing, of encounter with the Lord and with our Blessed Mother,” he said.
He called on the faithful to let the new shrine radiate holiness through the lives of the community. “Let us show His Eminence Cardinal Tagle—and the entire country—that this shrine will not only be known by name, but by the holiness that radiates from its people.”
Bishop Santos also expressed his hope that the shrine will become a place where “prayers rise like incense, where the poor are welcomed, where families are strengthened, and where vocations are nurtured.”
