Caritas Philippines has marked the observance of the country’s 125th Independence Day with a call for “cleaner” local elections and “societal progress”.
Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, president of Caritas Philippines, said genuine democracy “is built on the foundations of integrity and social responsibility,” adding that by exercising our right to vote, “we can actively shape the future of our nation.”
“We must elect leaders who are committed to upholding democratic values, promoting good governance, and championing social justice,” he said.
The Commission on Elections recorded a total of 1,476,551 newly registered voters for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections that will be held on October 30, 2023.
The prelate emphasized the need for “better ecology protection, improved peace and order, enhanced observance of justice and peace, and a reformed education system”.
Bishop Bagaforo said for the country to achieve the true essence of independence, “collective effort” is necessary to “elevate the lives and uphold the dignity of every Filipino.”
Caritas Philippines underscored the significance of ensuring that the electoral process remains free, fair, and credible. It calls upon the government to take necessary measures to guarantee transparency, accountability, and integrity throughout the elections.
“Together, let us forge a more just and equitable society, where every Filipino can live with dignity and freedom. Caritas Philippines remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the welfare of the Filipino people, upholding democratic values, and nurturing a society rooted in justice and compassion,” the prelate said.
