Christian youth group joins campaign for opposition candidates

“We must oppose every evil threat against our right to suffrage and our right for clean and honest elections”

The ecumenical Student Christian Movement of the Philippines announced that it will support the candidacy of opposition presidential candidate Leni Robredo, the country’s vice president.

“We participate in this election in order to fulfill our Christian duty in putting forward a united voice that will uphold human rights, medical solutions, and socio-economic aid for all,” said Kej Andres, the group’s spokesperson.

In a statement on February 8, start of the official campaign season for the May 2022 national elections, the youth group said the “Christian youth are one with the campaign of the Filipino people “to forward a pro-youth and pro-people’s agenda.”

“We urge the Filipino people to remain vigilant,” said the group. “We must oppose every evil threat against our right to suffrage and our right for clean and honest elections,” added Andres.

The youth group expressed hope that the country’s young people “will uphold democracy” in the elections.

About 25 million, or 40 percent of the 62 million Filipino voters, are considered youth.

On Tuesday, the Commission on Elections said it is confident that it has made all the necessary preparations to ensure a smooth campaign season.
