Philippine COVID-19 infections breach 550,000

Mayors in Metro Manila announced that they want to defer the reopening of cinemas, museums, and game arcades

At least 1,685 new cases of coronavirus infections have been reported on Monday in the Philippines, pushing the cumulative case count in the country to 550,860.

The Department of Health reported two additional mortalities on the same day, the lowest in nearly seven months.

Recoveries were, however, also low at 14, bringing the total to 511,755.

Infections were reported to be accelerating in the central province of Cebu with 1,955 new cases based on onset of illness or date of specimen collection in the last 14 days.

Quezon City followed with 908 new cases. Other cities with a high number of new cases were Davao and Manila.

Meanwhile, the mayors of the capital region announced that they want to defer the implementation of a government resolution allowing the reopening of cinemas, museums, game arcades and other leisure establishments in areas under “general community quarantine.”

Mayor Edwin Olivarez of Parañaque City, chairman of the Metro Manila Council, said the government leaders reached an agreement, but will still meet on Wednesday, Feb. 17, to discuss the matter.

A February 11 resolution of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases allowed the reopening of cinemas, game arcades, museums, theme parks and other leisure establishments to reopen in GCQ areas beginning February 15.

Metro Manila, or the National Capital Region, is under GCQ until the end of February. The region, with a population of over 12 million, has the highest number of coronavirus cases nationwide.
