Global church bodies warn widening Middle East war threatens civilians and regional peace

Global Christian organizations have warned that the widening conflict in the Middle East is placing civilians at grave risk and threatening regional stability, as hostilities continue to spread across the region.

In a joint statement, international church bodies expressed alarm over the humanitarian consequences of the escalating war and urged an immediate ceasefire and renewed diplomatic engagement.

The statement voiced “deep concern regarding the humanitarian and social impacts of the widening conflict in the Middle East, and the threat it poses to the peace and security of the region and the world.”

Church leaders warned that civilians are already paying the heaviest price and that the humanitarian crisis could worsen if the fighting continues.

“The humanitarian risks and suffering will inevitably escalate the longer this conflict continues,” the groups said.

The groups also raised concerns about possible violations of international humanitarian law during the ongoing military operations.

“Moreover, we are gravely concerned by the increasing reports indicating serious violations of international humanitarian law during the ongoing military operations,” they said.

“We insist that as a matter of moral and legal obligation all conflict participants must protect civilians from harm, and refrain from targeting civilian areas and infrastructure.”

The organizations also pointed to the widening regional impact of the violence. In Lebanon, they noted, the conflict has intensified.

“In Lebanon, the situation has escalated into a full-scale Israeli attack affecting multiple regions of the country, including the capital, Beirut,” the groups said, adding that the escalation has caused “widespread civilian suffering and has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes in search of safety.”

The church bodies criticized the turn toward military confrontation and called for renewed diplomacy.

“The abandonment of diplomacy in favour of armed attack is reckless and irresponsible,” the statement said.

“We reject the brutal logic of war and domination. We seek the gift of peace.”

The appeal was issued by the World Council of Churches, the Middle East Council of Churches, the Lutheran World Federation, the World Communion of Reformed Churches, the World Methodist Council, Mennonite World Conference, the Christian Conference of Asia, and ACT Alliance.
