‘In the end, it’s all about grace,’ says Kalibo bishop-elect

Bishop-elect Cyril Villareal of Kalibo said humility and trust in God’s grace will guide him as he begins what he described as a challenging new ministry.

Speaking before the bishops at the last day of their plenary assembly in Manila on Jan. 26, he said the task ahead is demanding and cannot be carried alone, stressing the importance of shared responsibility among Church leaders.

“In the end it’s all about grace,” he said. “I’m very sure that you will help me as I begin this new ministry.”

Villareal, a priest of the Archdiocese of Capiz, asked the bishops for their continued support, guidance and prayers as he prepares to formally assume his pastoral role.

“This is really a challenging and big ministry, so I’ll be asking for your support, help and guidance,” he added.

In a separate interview, Villareal said the deepest struggle he faces is an inner sense of unworthiness.

“The feeling of being unworthy — that’s actually the real battle — but in the end it’s God’s will,” he said.

He said his appointment is not about personal merit but about service and obedience to the Church.

“Because He has chosen me, I will just be an instrument for his grace,” Villareal said.

Villareal also expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV and to those who supported his appointment.

The pope on Jan. 24 appointed Villareal as the new bishop of Kalibo. He will succeed Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc, who retired after nearly 14 years of serving the diocese.

“I thank the Holy Father and the many people who have trusted me,” he said.
