Catholic communities across Zhejiang province have held prayer services and cultural activities to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japan and the World Anti-Fascist War.
In a statement, the Zhejiang Catholic “Two Associations” said local churches responded to the call of the national Catholic bodies by centering their observances on the theme “Remember history, honor the martyrs, cherish peace, and build the future.”
The commemoration included Masses, public recitations of the Rosary, the Prayer for Peace, and art exhibitions.
Organizers said the aim was to “promote the fine tradition of patriotism and love for the Church, and showcase Zhejiang Catholics’ commitment to peace.”
On August 12, Bishop Yang Yongqiang of Hangzhou presided over a Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, joined by priests based in the city, diocesan sisters, and parishioners.
During the liturgy, Bishop Yang appealed for prayers for global peace, saying, “Pray for peace in today’s world where local wars frequently erupt, that wars may end soon, and that people may live in safety and prosperity.”
He also urged the faithful to “remember history, honor the martyrs, cherish peace, and continue to deepen and implement the sinicization of Catholicism in Hangzhou.”
Bishop Yang stressed the need to “adhere to comprehensive and strict governance of the Church to ensure the healthy inheritance and orderly development of Catholicism in Hangzhou.”
Other dioceses in the province also joined in the commemorations. In Wenzhou, churches in Longgang, Huangzhong, Macheqian, Qiongtou, and Pingyang held prayer services, while in Ningbo, the Catholic Democratic Practice Base hosted an art exhibition and prayer events for peace.
