Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila has called for “community prayers” as Pope Francis continues treatment for pneumonia at a Rome hospital.
In a written appeal issued Wednesday evening, he urged parishes and communities to organize prayer activities for the pope’s swift recovery.
“In union with the whole Church, let us pray fervently for the healing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis,” Advincula said.
He added, “I would like to request our parishes and communities to organize community prayers for the intention of Pope Francis.”
The cardinal suggested that these activities could include gatherings for a holy hour focused on the healing of the sick, particularly the 88-year-old pontiff.
“Let us unite ourselves in prayer in this trying time for the Church,” Advincula said.
The Vatican on Wednesday morning said that the pope had a “restful night” and “woke up and had breakfast” at Gemelli hospital as he continues his recovery.
The Holy See Press Office also noted that Pope Francis had gotten out of bed and sat in an armchair.
The brief Vatican update comes as the pope undergoes additional therapy following Tuesday’s diagnosis of bilateral pneumonia.
