Pope Francis calls on youth to shift from digital passivity to active community engagement

Pope Francis urged the youth to “arise” from the complacency linked with excessive digital technology use and to “go” into the world purposefully.

In a meeting with the youth in Venice, the pontiff focused on the actions “arise” and “went” as demonstrated by the Blessed Virgin Mary, to inspire proactive engagement.

“Arise from sadness to lift your gaze upward. Rise to stand in front of life, not to sit on the couch,” Pope Francis said.

He highlighted this directive as a way to combat the ‘oppressive inertia’ that can result from living life through digital screens.

The Pope contrasted passive digital media consumption with active community and faith connections. He emphasized the importance of shifting from observation to participation, from enduring life to engaging it fully.

Using the analogy of Venice’s gondolas, which must row against the current, he illustrated his point about perseverance and the rewards of active faith. “Rowing requires regularity,” he noted, “But perseverance brings rewards, even if the path is difficult.”

He encouraged the youth to transform their lives by seeing themselves as both recipients and givers of God’s gifts. By rising to accept themselves as gifts and going forth to share these gifts, they can make a meaningful difference in the world.

Pope Francis encouraged the youth to integrate prayer, gratitude, and creative action into their daily lives.

“Then go! Go out, and walk together with others; look for those who are alone, color the world with your creativity, and paint the streets of life with the Gospel. Arise and go,” he said.
