The social action arm of the Catholic Church in the Philippines has urged the public “to embark on a journey of reflection, repentance, and renewal” in observance of Holy Week.
Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, president of Caritas Philippines, encouraged Filipinos to “examine their lives” and “identify areas where we can grow closer to God and strengthen our relationships with our neighbors.”
Bishop Bagaforo highlighted the significance of Alay Kapwa, a Filipino value that means offering oneself to others.
He explained that Alay Kapwa goes beyond simple acts of charity; it involves acknowledging how our lives are interconnected. By assisting those in need, we play a part in enhancing the well-being of our entire community.
“This could be extending a helping hand to a struggling family, volunteering time to a local charity, or simply practicing patience and understanding with those around us. Every act of compassion, no matter how small, contributes to a more just and loving society,” he said.
In addition to encouraging personal reflection and charitable deeds, Caritas Philippines advocates for national prayer.
Bishop Bagaforo emphasized the importance of praying for the country’s well-being, seeking divine wisdom and guidance for its leaders, and asking for peace, unity, strength, and resilience to overcome challenges within the community.
