Caritas Philippines issues appeal for aid for typhoon-hit areas

The social action arm of the Catholic Church in the Philippines has launched an appeal to help communities devastated by Typhoon Egay (international name: Doksuri).

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo of Kidapawan, president of Caritas Philippines, on Wednesday encouraged “unaffected” dioceses “to send emergency relief” to typhoon-stricken areas in northern Philippines.

“They will be needing food, shelter materials, water, medicine, and other emergency supplies. Affected communities will also be needing our prayers,” the prelate said.

The National Risk Reduction and Management Council on Wednesday morning has recorded 58 flooded areas in five regions and 16 incidents of rain-induced landslides.

The typhoon made landfall in Aparri town in Cagayan province with maximum sustained winds of 175 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph.

Bishop Colin said Caritas Philippines has already activated a quick reaction team to conduct initial assessment on the impacts of the typhoon.

The prelate also urged the Social Action Centers of affected dioceses “to send updates and situational reports” to Caritas Philippines.

“We need close coordination with the diocesan social action centers to immediately identify the needs of affected communities,” he said.

Aside from sending assistance, Caritas Philippines will also be helping dioceses conduct rapid assessments.
