Radio commentator in southern Philippines shot dead

The victim was waiting for his car in front of a repair shop when two men on a motorbike arrived and shot him at close range

A radio commentator was shot dead by still unidentified gunmen in the southern Philippine city of Tacurong on Wednesday, January 12.

The victim was identified as Jaynard Angeles, 36, of Matiompong village in the neighboring town of Lambayong.

A report on the government-run Philippine News Agency said Angeles, former station manager of Radyo ni Juan FM station and a radio commentator, died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The PNA report said Angeles had resigned from Radyo ni Juan FM to run for councilor in his hometown under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas party.

A report on Radio DXOM in Koronadal City said that Angeles was waiting for his car in front of a repair shop in New Carmen village when two men on a motorbike arrived and shot Angeles at close range.

Police investigators are still looking into the motive of the shooting, which happened on the fourth day of the strict implementation of the nationwide election gun ban.
