As the world braces for the “new normal,” a Vatican official lamented how people quickly forget the lessons on humility from the coronavirus pandemic.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the Congregation of the Evangelization of Peoples, decried how the pandemic is highlighting divisions in many parts of the world.
“We are back to the imposition of influence and power,” Cardinal Tagle said in his homily during Mass at the Pontifical Filipino College in Rome on Sunday.
He said that some people claimed that if there’s one fruit of the pandemic, it “has humbled humanity.”
But in the months since the crisis had started, the cardinal observed how people are back to “fighting and blaming” again.
“Unfortunately, I think humility is not welcome in the new normal,” Cardinal Tagle said. “When will we learn?”
Reflecting on the day’s readings, he encouraged the faithful to learn from Jesus “by being meek to one another”.
“We hope we’ll walk as humble as he does. The walk of God is a humble walk,” he added.
“So let us welcome the king who will come to us on a lowly donkey who will put to shame all the weapons, the arms of pride and domination, for that is not the true kingdom.”
“The true kingdom is inaugurated by the humble one with the meek heart,” the cardinal said.
