The population of nomadic Salone (also known as the Moken people) in Myanmar has dramatically declined in recent decades. Only an estimated 1,700 remain today, down from about 17,000 in 1980.
For centuries the Salone have lived a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle heavily based on the sea.
Now Myanmar’s government is applying pressure on those remaining to abandon their sea-based lifestyle.
