Religious superiors decry Senate ‘maneuver,’ call for moral reckoning amid flood-control corruption probe

The Conference of Major Superiors in the Philippines (CMSP), through its Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Commission (JPICC), denounced what it called a “Senate leadership maneuver” that could undermine the ongoing investigation into massive corruption in flood-control projects.

In a statement, the religious superiors said the political move “threatens to derail the ongoing investigation into massive corruption in flood-control projects.”

“Such political manipulation deepens public suspicion, masks the truth, and betrays the people’s longing for justice,” the group said.

The religious leaders issued the statement as the Church marked October 7 as a National Day of Prayer and Public Repentance. Citing Ephesians 5:11, they said, “Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness, but rather expose them to the light.”

The CMSP-JPICC and its partners said corruption in government demands not new elections but a collective moral reckoning.

“The answer to corruption is not a snap election but a moral reckoning,” they said. “Before seeking new power, those who have betrayed public trust must first face full accountability.”

The group also called for the Independent Commission on Infrastructure (ICI) to be allowed to “fulfill its mandate freely, fully, and fearlessly — through a transparent process that upholds truth, public trust, and justice.”

“All who are accountable must be responsible — before the law, before the people, and before God,” the statement read. “This is not a time for ambition but for repentance. Not a time for politics but for conscience.”

They urged national reflection and repentance, saying, “Let truth shine where darkness hides, and let justice roll like a river across our land.”

“As we bow in prayer and repentance, may our collective conversion bring healing to our nation — that truth may triumph, justice prevail, and integrity be restored in our public life,” they said.

The statement closed with a clear appeal: “No to the masking of the truth. No to a snap election. Yes to truth, justice, and full accountability.”
