Caritas Philippines: Holy Week is time for discernment, not campaigning

The social action arm of the Catholic Church in the Philippines has called on candidates running in the upcoming midterm elections to suspend political activities during Holy Week and use the time for reflection and discernment.

In a statement released on April 12, Caritas Philippines urged aspirants for public office to recognize the sacredness of the season and reflect on their responsibilities as future leaders of the nation.

“Holy Week is not only a time for spiritual renewal but also a meaningful opportunity to contemplate the path of public service,” said Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, president of Caritas Philippines.

“We urge our aspiring leaders to reflect sincerely on the good they can do for the country and to recommit themselves to selfless service for the Filipino people—especially the poor, the marginalized, and the voiceless,” the prelate added.

The Caritas Philippines also emphasized the importance of preserving democratic integrity during the electoral period. “May this election be a celebration of genuine democracy and justice.”

The Church agency added that the Holy Week observance offers a chance for the entire nation—not just politicians—to renew their commitment to truth, compassion, and the common good.

“May this Holy Week lead us all toward a renewed sense of purpose, guided by truth, compassion, and the common good,” the statement read.

The call comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the May 2025 polls, with Caritas joining other Church institutions in urging ethical campaigning and voter discernment rooted in Catholic social teaching.
