Borongan diocese marks anniversary with tour of jubilee crosses

The diocese marks its 61st anniversary and the 500th year of the arrival of Christianity in the country with a tour of jubilee crosses

The Diocese of Borongan in the central Philippines will mark its 61st anniversary and the 500th year of the arrival of Christianity in the country with a tour of three jubilee crosses starting this month.

The three jubilee crosses will come from the northern, central, and southern parts of the diocese and will pass all parishes in Eastern Samar.

Father Jayson Gamalo said the diocese’s youth commission will spearhead the tour. The crosses will stay in a parish for at least a week and will be transferred to another parish until April.

The parishes will hold the rite of reception and the rite of the Pilgrim Cross, but can also add other activities, said Father Gamalo.

The jubilee crosses were blessed by Bishop Crispin Varquez during the eucharistic celebration of the diamond jubilee of the diocese on Oct. 22, 2021.

The Diocese of Borongan was established in 1960 and is home to about half a million Catholics in 32 parishes and four chaplaincies. – with a report from Elena Bingco
