Christian youth group demands assurance for safe resumption of classes

The students said they and their families have faced hardships due to “mental and financial strains” during the pandemic

The Student Christian Movement of the Philippines demanded an assurance from the government for the safe resumption of classes during the pandemic.

In a statement, the group put to task the Commission on Higher Education for allegedly failing to provide the requisites for the safe resumption of classes.

The [government] and [the commission] have clearly failed to commit to our immediate demands for inclusive and accessible education amidst the pandemic,” said Kej Andres, spokesman of the group.

He said that for more than a year already, students and their families have faced hardships due to “mental and financial strains.”

The Christian youth group said small academic institutions are in need of government support, noting that many private schools have already closed.

The government has earlier ordered the suspension of face-to-face classes as the national capital and nearby areas were placed under a “modified enhanced community quarantine.”

Several colleges and universities were earlier allowed to conduct limited face-to-face classes for specific courses.

Earlier, the Educational Policy Research and Development Center called for legislation to institutionalize online or “blended” education.

The group cited studies that proved that online education is “creating renewed zealousness for learning among young students across all levels.”
