Webinar on history of Philippine Catholic Church launched

The series is open to people who are interested in the history of the Church

A webinar series on the history of the Catholic Church of the Philippines was recently launched by the History Department of the University of Asia and the Pacific.

The “Philippine Church History Webinar Series” was launched on Feb. 13 and will be held every Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, until April 17, 2021.

The university announced that the event is its contribution to the country’s celebration of the 500 years of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines.

The series is open to people who are interested in the history of the Church.

The webinar series will examine and analyze the challenges and responses that the Church encountered as it expanded and developed in the country.

The series will also tackle the beginnings of the Catholic Church in the Philippines from the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century, the spread of the faith throughout the archipelago, the attempts of the Church to establish footholds in neighboring territories, and how the Church faced various challenges all the way to the 20th century.

The speakers will use Jesuit Father John N. Schumacher’s books titled “Readings in Philippine Church History” and “Growth and Decline: Essays in Philippine Church History” as discussion material for the webinar.
