Philippines’ oldest bishop, retired Bishop Sorra of Legazpi, dies

Bishop Jose Sorra was prelate of Legazpi from 1993 until his retirement in 2005

The Philippines’ oldest bishop, Jose Sorra of Legazpi, died on Thursday, January 21, at the age of 91.

He passed way around midnight “due to respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary embolism,” said Bishop Joel Baylon, Legazpi’s current bishop.

“We ask for your prayers for his eternal rest,” said Bishop Baylon.

Bishop Sorra was born on March 9, 1929, in Malinao town in Albay province.

He was ordained priest on March 17, 1956.

On May 27, 1974, he was appointed bishop of Virac and hi episcopal ordination was on Aug. 28, 1974.

On March 1, 1993, he was appointed bishop of Legazpi. He retired on April 1, 2005.
