Diocese of Novaliches confers papal award to philanthropic engineer

A civil engineer who is known for his philanthropic works received a papal award from Bishop Roberto Gaa of the Diocese of Novaliches.

Engineer Noli Vitug received the medal of the Order of St. Sylvester during Mass at the Holy Cross Parish Church in Amparo, Caloocan City, on December 5.

In his homily, Bishop Gaa said the award is the Catholic Church’s affirmation of Vitug’s service to the diocese.

The bishop, however, said that while it is a “big honor,” it also comes with a “big responsibility.”

“It is just an affirmation, but it is also a responsibility to continue what you have been doing and maybe even more,” Bishop Gaa told Vitug.

“We become witnesses, fearless in proclaiming the Gospel truth. In continuing to share the goodness of God, the award does not end it,” he said.

A married man and a father of four, Vitug is known for his kindness and generosity in and outside the diocese.

Vitug, through his construction company, helped parishes in the building churches, including the Kristong Hari Parish along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

Vitug also heads the pastoral council of the Holy Cross Parish.

The Pontifical Award for the Sylvester Order is given to individuals for their invaluable support to the Catholic Church.

It is also one of the five orders of knighthood in the Church awarded by the pope to laypeople actively involved in the Church’s mission.

Papal awards are normally recommended by diocesan bishops or by apostolic nuncios.
