Philippine diocese braces for another strong typhoon

The Diocese of Virac in the province of Catanduanes has barely recovered from the devastation brought by super typhoon "Rolly"

A Catholic diocese south of Manila is bracing for another strong typhoon that is set to slam into the country late on Wednesday, November 11, barely two weeks after super typhoon “Rolly” (international name: Goni) hit the northern Philippines.

The Diocese of Virac in the province of Catanduanes has barely recovered from the devastation brought by super typhoon “Rolly” when typhoon “Ulysses” (international name: Vamco) followed with strong winds and rains.

Father Renato dela Rosa, social action director of the diocese, said the local government has already done “preventive evacuation” of residents to whatever available evacuation areas.

“Our problem now is the evacuation buildings,” said the priest. “We are calling on our residents who can accommodate our evacuees to please help just like what we did before during typhoon ‘Rolly.’”

Up to 90 percent of infrastructures in the province of Catanduanes were devastated by super typhoon “Rolly” that slammed through the region on November 2.

On Wednesday morning, Typhoon Signal No. 3 has already been raised in much of central Luzon and southern Luzon, including Metro Manila.

“Ulysses” has already intensified from a “severe tropical storm” into a typhoon as of eight o’clock in the morning while it moved closer to the provinces of Quezon and Aurora.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said “Ulysses” has maximum sustained winds of 125 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 155 km/h.
