Pope Francis urges Church to ‘eradicate’ conditions that protect abusers

Pope Francis emphasized the Church’s need to “eradicate situations that protect abusers,” in a message to the 3rd Latin American Congress on safeguarding in Panama.

Organized by the Center for the Protection of Minors (CEPROME), the congress aimed to tackle the themes of “Vulnerability and abuse: Towards a broader view of prevention.”

The Pope underscored the importance of nurturing individuals who are capable of “confronting evil, bearing witness to the truth in capital letters,” according to a Vatican News report.

He reiterated the Church’s dedication to the “suffering face of Jesus in each of the victims,” a commitment highlighted during his meeting with CEPROME members in September 2023.

Urging for the conversion of sinners, including abusers, Pope Francis advocated for comprehensive efforts to prevent abuse.

He spoke about viewing vulnerability through God’s perspective, suggesting that acknowledging our weaknesses can lead to growth rather than resentment. This viewpoint aligns with the Christian call to find strength in God’s grace (cf. 2 Cor 12:8-10).

Francis pointed out the need to address the protection afforded to abusers within the Church, emphasizing the prevention of abuse and the understanding of unhealthy behaviors.

He criticized societies lacking moral integrity, indicating that such environments inevitably foster relationships based on selfishness, fear, and deceit.

The Pope encouraged congress attendees to “entrust their weakness to the strength that the Lord gives us,” highlighting the role of faith in overcoming adversity and contributing to the common good.
