Manila archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula urged hundreds of thousands of devotees to actively “seek, embody, and share the divine presence” of Jesus of Nazareth.
In his homily during the celebration of the Eucharist on the feast day of the Black Nazarene, the prelate encouraged the faithful to be “models of faith and concern for others.”
He emphasized that true devotion is reflected in the devotee’s life, echoing the life of Jesus. Advincula called on the faithful to “show Jesus in their actions, to be instruments for others to witness the transformative power” of the Black Nazarene.
The annual traslacion (literally transfer), or procession of the Black Nazarene, which draws millions of devotees, started a few hours after the Holy Mass.
The traslacion procession recalls the 1787 transfer of the image of the Black Nazarene from an Augustinian church in the old walled city of Manila to the basilica in the city’s Quiapo district.
More than 15,000 security and medical personnel have been deployed along the procession route.
It is the first time the traditional parade featuring the life-sized statue has been held since 2020 after Covid-19 forced officials to downsize the event drastically.
More than 380 people had received medical assistance by late morning, the Philippine Red Cross said on Facebook.
This year, the icon has been placed in a glass case for the first time and participants were banned from getting on the float — though some ignored the directive in their desperation to wipe a towel on the glass in the hope of receiving a miracle.
