Environmental advocates in the Philippines marked the historic global marches against fossil fuels with a call for a just and equitable end to dirty energy sources.

The demonstrators marched from the Quezon Memorial Circle to the Department of Environmental Resources and Department of Agriculture headquarters in Quezon City on Friday, September 15.

They called on the government and the private sector to stop funding fossil fuel projects and support renewable energy resources and projects that help mitigate climate change.

Ian Rivera, coordinator of the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ) said the success of a fast and fair fossil fuel phaseout primarily lies with the leaders of developed countries with huge historical responsibility for the climate crisis.

“Wealthy countries must deliver their full fair share of climate actions, including meeting their climate finance obligations so that developing countries, the least responsible but suffering the brunt of the climate crisis, can rapidly shift to efficient, safe, renewable energy,” Rivera said.
