Manila cardinal’s right-hand man retains post

Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila has reappointed Monsignor Jose Clemente Ignacio as the vicar general of the archdiocese

Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila has reappointed Monsignor Jose Clemente Ignacio as the vicar general of the archdiocese.

Msgr. Ignacio will keep the position he’s held since 2015 when Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was still archbishop of Manila.

A vicar general is the highest official in a diocese after the bishop, who acts as his principal deputy.

Msgr. Ignacio has previously served, among others, as rector of Quiapo Church, and the archdiocese’s episcopal vicar, chancellor, and oeconomus.

More than 200 priests were given new roles on Oct. 13 in a major reshuffle of the clergy of the archdiocese, which covers the parishes in the cities of Manila, Pasay, Makati, Mandaluyong and San Juan.

Among the new appointments announced by the archdiocese was Msgr. Rolando dela Cruz, who will serve as the new rector of the Manila Cathedral.

He will replace Father Regie Malicdem who was named chaplain at the chapels of Landmark and SM malls in Makati City.

The cardinal also appointed Msgr. Geronimo Reyes as the new rector of the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of Sto. Niño de Tondo, replacing Father Estelito Villegas who was transferred to the Ermita Church.

Father Anton Pascual, meanwhile, will remain as executive director Caritas Manila, the lead social services and development ministry of the archdiocese. He has been serving the post since 2005.
