The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Good and Perpetual Help has named its first Filipino superior this month.
“The new responsibility is a big challenge for me,” said Sister Marie Ingkie Veloz Taboclaon in an interview with Radio Veritas Asia.
“But with God’s grace and with the cooperation of the members, I hope to serve God’s people well,” she added.
Before her appointment, Sister Taboclaon worked in the Office of Social Communication of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences.
The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Good and Perpetual Help, also known as BPS Sisters, maintains two communities in the Philippines — a novitiate and retreat house in Silang, Cavite, and a formation house in Quezon City.
The nuns provide care for the education of poor children by providing scholarships and catechism. The congregation’s main house is in Rome.
“It is the right time that a Filipino should lead the Philippines Mission,” said Mother Danielle Choo Box Sang, the congregation’s superior general.
The congregation was founded by Mother Mary Augustine Lenferna de Laresles and Father Xavier Masuy, a Belgian missionary priest in Mauritius, on June 18, 1850, as as response to the need for spiritual and material support in the African region.
