Lipa archdiocese appeals for masks as Taal Volcano spews toxic gas

The Lipa Archdiocesan Social Action Center said the face masks are intended primarily for residents near the volcano

The Catholic Church in Batangas province appealed for N-95 masks after the Taal Volcano showed an increased emission of harmful sulfur dioxide.

The Lipa Archdiocesan Social Action Center said the face masks are intended primarily for residents near the volcano.

“There is still a need for N95 (masks) especially in areas near the Taal Volcano,” it said.

Face mask donations may be brought to LASAC’s headquarters at the St. Francis de Sales Major Seminary compound in Lipa City.

On Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology maintained alert level 1 in Taal Volcano after continuing to record low-level unrest and observing a volcanic smog.

Phivolcs said it continued to record a sulfur dioxide flux of 3,945 tons per day, with upwelling of hot volcanic fluid in the main crater, causing a “vog,” or volcanic smog to also be observed.

Plumes 2,100 meters tall were also observed by Phivolcs which drifted south-southwest.
