The Easter Vigil, also called the Paschal Vigil or the Great Vigil of Easter, is a liturgy held in traditional Christian churches as the first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus.
The vigil celebration includes the lighting of fires and candles to symbolize Christ’s passing from death to life, and the tolling of church bells to signify the joyous end of the season of Lent.
The Paschal candle is the first candle to be lit with a flame from the “sacred fire,” representing the light of Christ coming into the world.
During the celebration, the faithful renew Baptismal Vows.
The Easter Vigil celebration lasts longer than any other church services, with the main part of the Mass to begin about 45 minutes to an hour after the start of the ceremonies.
