Slightly fewer Filipino families have considered themselves poor in the past three months, a survey done by pollster Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.
The national Social Weather Survey, which was conducted September 12-16, 2021, found 45% of Filipino families rating themselves as “mahirap” or “poor,” 34% rating themselves as “borderline poor,” and 21% rating themselves as “hindi mahirap” or “not poor.”
This compares to June 2021when 48% felt poor, 29% felt borderline poor, and 23% felt not poor.
The survey estimated that 11.4 million Filipino families felt they were poor in September 2021, as compared to the 12.0 million households who considered themselves poor in June 2021.
SWS has measured Self-Rated Poverty quarterly by face-to-face surveys ever since 1992, except in the first three quarters of 2020 when F2F was not possible for lack of public transportation in the pandemic.
SWS resumed the SRP surveys in the 4th quarter of 2020, up to the present. On the other hand, official poverty is measured only every three years, the last time being 2018, which was pre-pandemic.
