The construction of what will be a pilgrimage site on the historic island of Limasawa in Southern Leyte province has been going on in the past weeks.
The “Shrine and Pilgrim Center with a Tower of Light,” which is a seven-storey complex monument, is being built by Diocese of Maasin in the village of Magallanes.
The project broke ground in February last year in a simple ceremony led by Bishop Precioso Cantillas of Maasin who has been calling for donations for the project.
The aim is to finish the project before the end of the anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the country in March 2022.
“I invite you to give thanks to God for the gift of faith we all have received by donating an amount or construction materials,” said Bishop Cantillas in a statement.
The initiative is one of the diocese’s main projects for the year-long celebration that will start in the diocese on March 31 to commemorate the first Easter Mass that took place on the island in 1521.
Archbishop Charles John Brown, apostolic nuncio to the Philippines, is set to attend the celebration along with some bishops and priests from other dioceses.
The pilgrim image of the Sto. Niño de Cebu will also be visiting the island for the celebration of the “gift of faith.”
