Pope’s envoy to Philippines urges Catholics to work for inter-religious unity

“In a world that’s increasingly fractured for all kinds of reasons, we as Catholic Christians need to be at the forefront of creating unity and understanding”

The papal nuncio to the Philippines this week urged Filipino Catholics to be more active in pursuing inter-religious unity.

Archbishop Charles John Brown said people “can’t overestimate” the importance of ecumenical and inter-religious relations.

“In a world that’s increasingly fractured for all kinds of reasons, we as Catholic Christians need to be at the forefront of creating unity and understanding,” said Archbishop Brown.

He was speaking in a video message for an online seminar for bishops on ecumenism, inter-religious dialogue and indigenous peoples on Tuesday, February 9.

The seminar, which carried the theme “Dialogue Towards Harmony,” is divided into three series, with two others scheduled on February 16 and 23.

The first session focused on the Vatican document “The Bishop and Christian Unity and Ecumenical Vademecum,” which was released by the Vatican on December 4.

Archbishop Brown said that to achieve unity, the Church must continually engage in a three-fold dialogue of love, truth and life.

“Through this three-fold dialogue, we increase the movement towards unity, which is what our Lord prayed for at the Last Supper,”Ut unum sint,” that they may all be one,” he said.
