The social action arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippine has issued a global appeal for aid as super typhoon Rolly (international name: Goni) battered the country on Sunday, November 1.
In a text message sent to LiCAS.news, Caritas Philippines said it is anticipating “Rolly” to leave “massive destruction” in the country.
Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, national director of Caritas Philippines, said the typhoon “will surely bring greater poverty” to many communities that are already suffering from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
“So with humility, we appeal for everyone’s sincere acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion,” he said.
Jing Rey Henderson, communications officer of Caritas Philippines, told LiCAS.news that most dioceses affected by an earlier typhoon that hit the country were also experiencing the wrath of “Rolly.”
“They haven’t recovered yet from the devastation of Typhoon Molave, now they are bracing for the impact of this much dangerous weather condition,” she said.
Last week, Caritas Philippines sought support from other local organizations to provide assistance to areas affected by the previous typhoon.
“We expect more dioceses will seek aid and support after this super typhoon. So, we appeal to the public to extend help especially to poor communities,” he said.
Goni has been tagged as the world’s most powerful tropical cyclone yet in 2020.
