The Diocese of Borongan in the central Philippines celebrated the “birthday” of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8 amid quarantine restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Virgin Mary reminds us to sacrifice ourselves for others, to serve others, and to seek what is good for them,” said Bishop Crispin Varquez of Borongan in his message.

The celebration also marked the 269th anniversary of the inauguration of the church in Borongan on Sept. 8, 1751. It later became the Borongan Cathedral.

The Cathedral Parish of Borongan also celebrated its 324th parish feast day in honor of the Nuestra Señora de Borongan whose feast day falls on the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
