Faith-based group joins road sharing campaign in Manila

A church-based group in Manila has joined a campaign to make roads safer for cyclists as part of its goal to promote concrete ecological actions.

Members of Living Laudato Si Philippines took part in the three-day “road-sharing exercise” organized by various government agencies and cycling groups from June 27 to 29.

Rodne Galicha, executive director of Living Laudato Si’ Philippines, said the campaign to share the road to cyclists “is an ecological issue and a social justice issue.”

He said the campaign to foster the use of non-motorized vehicles “answers our call to reduce the carbon footprint” and “to ease the burden of the commuting public.”

Galicha said they are hoping that the exercise will be transformed into a sustained policy and action that will promote social justice.

The campaign to promote a “biking culture” and “dedicated safe lanes for cyclists” resurfaced during the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In March, the government suspended the operation of public transportation, forcing workers who were allowed to go outside their homes to alternative modes of transportation.

Galicha, who is also a convener of Bikers United Marshall, told LiCAS.news that they will organize more activities that will “encourage the public” to use non-motorized vehicles.

He said they are already coordinating with different church-based organizations and religious congregations to mobilize church people across the country to lead the campaign.
