Authorities have torn down a 70-year-old mosque belonging to Pakistan’s minority Ahmadi community in eastern Punjab province, a spokesman for the sect said.
Police swooped to demolish the mosque in Hasilpur, a remote Muslim-majority village last weekend, Saleem-ud-Din told AP.
The village is home to only around a dozen Ahmadi residents.
The dome of the mosque, which was reserved for the prayer leader, was left in a pile of rubble, according to Din.
He dismissed police claims that the mosque was built illegally on government land.
There are an estimated half a million Ahmadis in Muslim-majority Pakistan, which has a population of around 220 million.
Members of the sect, as well as their places of worship and homes, are often targeted by conservative Muslims who consider them heretics for believing that Muhammad was not the last prophet.
The Ahmadiyya movement was founded in the Punjab region during British colonial rule in the late 19th century.
Pakistan declared Ahmadis non-Muslims in 1974.
